Arguably one of the most beautiful spots along the Wild Coast, the small village of Coffee Bay.. This legendary Wild Coast village got it's name in 1893 when a shipfull of coffee beans ran aground here. Though some of the beans did take root, none survived in the salty soil. Still, the legend of the shipwreck was enough to leave it's mark on the bay for centuries to come and today the bay is still named after the event.

Coffee Bay & Hole in the Wall are virtually synonymous - mention the one and you picture the other - and one cannot describe the full extend of the beauty of this area of the Wild Coast without including this incredible natural phenonenan.

Hole in the Wall is about 9 km from Coffee Bay. The hole is quite literally a geographical marvel. it's an offshore shack of rock through which the elements have aroded a hole.

The hole is directly in the path of the Mpako River and it is this, rather than wind or the surf, that has eroded the hole.

This massive hole is difficult to climb though many have attempted to do so. The amplified noise of the waves, which crash into the hole and onto the rock outside, inspired the Xhosa people to call it "Esi Khaleni' which means, Place of Sound..

Coffee Bay is the only coastal resort, other than Port St Johns, to sport a tarred road to it's door from the N2 highway.

The surrounding countryside is rugged with high cliffs and peppered with distinctive round, thatched, traditional hut's, made largely from car tyres and coloured bottles.

The climate Coffee Bay receives about 870mm of rain per year, with most rainfall occuring during summer.

The average daily maximum temperatures ranges from 20.9 degrees in February. The region is coldest during July when the mercury drops to 9.8 degrees on average during the night.
